Bangladesh sees rise in violence along borders

Incidents of violence along the country's borders increased during the period from January to August 2020 compared to the same period of 2019, according to a report of a local independent rights body.

The Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) report noted that a total of 34 Bangladeshis were killed in incidents of violence along the borders in the first eight months of the current calendar year, while the number was 26 during the same time frame last year.

Some 29 people were shot dead and five others succumbed to physical torture in the border areas during the period under review, the ASK report showed.

Apart from this, some 20 people were also abducted and 17 others injured along Bangladesh borders in the first eight months of the ongoing year, whereas some 25 were abducted and 20 others injured in the corresponding period of last year, the report added.

The ASK prepared the data based on the published reports of some renowned national and regional daily newspapers in the country.
