At least 1,012 people were killed and 1,146 others injured in road accidents in the last two months across the country.

During the period, a total of 848 road accidents took place. Among the deceased, 143 were women and 130 children, according to a report by Road Safety Foundation (RSF).

A total of 403 people died in 358 motorcycle crashes in the January-February period, which is 39.82 per cent of the total fatalities, said the report, released on Saturday.

Chattogram division topped the list of fatalities with 231 deaths while Sylhet division was in the bottom of the toll list with 42 deaths.

At least 27 people were killed in 21 road crashes in the capital in the period.

The RSF prepared the report based on news items of seven national dailies, five online news portals and visual media.

Unfit vehicles, rash driving, lack of skills, mental and physical sickness, inadequate benefits for drivers, slow movement of vehicles on the highways, reckless bike ride by youths and lack of awareness about traffic laws were responsible for the accidents, the RSF observed.

The organisation suggested increasing the numbers of skilled drivers, strengthening the capability of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and enforcement of the Road Transport Act-2018 to check road crashes.
