Bangladesh records highest single-day spike in virus cases

DGHS reports 45 more fatalities, 4014 fresh cases

Bangladesh registered its highest single-day increase in the coronavirus cases with 4014 new infections in the last 24 hours today (Monday).

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 45 deaths from the deadly virus today, the 114th day of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

With the latest victims, the death toll due to the virus infection reached at 1783, Additional Director General of the DGHS Dr Nasima Sultana said.

According to the DGHS, with the new cases, the total number of identified cases in the country now stands at 141,801.

Among the diseased, 36 were men and 9 women, while two were between 21-30, three were between 31-40, seven between 41-50, eleven between 51-60, fourteen between 61-70, six between 71-80, one was between 81-90, and one between 91-100 years old.

Twenty-two deaths were from Dhaka division, ten from Chattogram, five from Khulna, one from Mymensingh, one from Rajshahi, three each from Sylhet and Barisal divisions.

Thirty people died in hospital, fourteen in their homes, and one tested positive after dead, DGHS senior official added.

Simultaneously, 2,053 people recovered from the respiratory disease, bringing the overall number of recovery to 57,780, Dr Nasima said.

A total of 17,837 samples were tested in 64 labs across the country during the period. With this, a total of 748,034 samples have so far been tested in the country.

On Sunday, 43 people died and 3,809 people tested positive for the highly infectious disease.

According to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services, 64,959 people now remain in both home and institutional quarantine while 14,942 others in isolation.

Globally, 10,265,207 people were infected with the novel coronavirus and 504,744 have died until Monday 3:00 pm, according to Worldometer data.

Of the infected, 4,193,847 are currently being treated while 57,348 of them are in serious or critical condition, the website data shows.
