Bangladesh has secured top place among South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations in the global cyber security index compiled by National Cyber Security Index (NCSI) jumping 27 ranks in the index this year.

According to the index published on the NCSI website, the country has made a score of 59.74 standing at 38th among 160 countries around the globe while it stood at 65 places in the December 2020 index.

The NCSI has been developed to assess basic cyber-attack preparedness, cyber incidents, crime, and major crisis management activities.

Greece was ranked top position with a score of 96.10 globally in the latest index while the Czech Republic stood second with a score of 92.21 and Estonia was ranked in third place with a score of 90.91.

The index prepared by the Estonia-based e-Governance Academy Foundation also said the United States was ranked 17th, while the United Kingdom was 19th.

Among the top 20 countries, Asia's only representative is Singapore making it at 16-place.

Apart from this, Sri Lanka ranks 69 place and Pakistan at 70, Japan 34, and China 83.

India ranks 39th among the countries in the region.

In a statement, state-run BGD e-GOV CIRT project director Tareq M Barkatullah said the BGD e-Govt CIRT is working tirelessly on cyber security, and such recognition will encourage us to thwart cyber-attacks and help increase the country's capabilities in cyber security.

The NCSI measures the preparedness of countries to prevent cyber threats and manage cyber incidents while it is also a database with publicly available evidence materials and a tool for national cyber security capacity building.

The index has been developed in 5 steps: identification of national-level cyber threats, identification of cyber security measures and capacities, selection of important and measurable aspects, and development of cyber security indicators.
