Country observes World Hydrography Day

Bangladesh has observed World Hydrography Day with an aim to highlighting the importance of Hydrography.

This year the theme of the day is “Bathymetry-the foundation for sustainable seas, oceans and waterways,” says a media release.

Bangladesh Navy organised a seminar at the School of Maritime Warfare and Tactics (SMWT) in the Chattogram naval area to commemorate the day on Thursday.

Chairman of National Hydrographic Committee, and also the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations), Rear Admiral Mohammad Makbul Hossain was present at the seminar as chief guest.

The representatives from different ministries and maritime stakeholders and members of the National Hydrographic Committee along with senior naval officers were present at the function.

Bangladesh is one of the members of International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) and Bangladesh Navy (BN) acts as the focal point of all hydrographic matters in the sea area of the country.

The BN said different issues including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by United Nations which has total 17 goals.

In the seminar, the BN highlighted several issues such as seaborne trade and commerce, resource exploration and exploitation, ocean science and observation, and defence and security.

Bangladesh Navy has developed the capability to produce International Standard Nautical Charts, they said. “Our charts are being used for ocean navigation by the mariners worldwide.”

It has a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with United Kingdom Hydrographic Office to print the BN charts and market them to the mariners worldwide.

Country is earning royalties from the sale proceed of these charts, the said.  

Representatives from different ministries and maritime stakeholders, members of the National Hydrographic Committee and armed forces personnel were also present at the seminar.
