As the military has seized power in Myanmar, Bangladesh has expressed hope that democratic process and constitutional arrangements would be upheld in the neighbouring country.

The foreign ministry issued a statement on Monday following the military takeover of power in Myanmar and detention of civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

"As an immediate and friendly neighbour, we would like to see peace and stability in Myanmar," reads the statement.

Without making a direct reference to the coup, the foreign ministry added that Bangladesh firmly adheres to and promotes democratic ethos.

“We have been persistent in developing mutually beneficial relations with Myanmar and have been working with Myanmar for the voluntary, safe and sustained repatriation of the Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh,” the statement said.

Myanmar is yet to take back anyone from more than one million Rohingya people in Bangladesh, who fled their homes in Rakhine state in 2017 and before, despite official talks and assurance of repatriation.

The ministry said Bangladesh expects that these processes would continue in right earnest.
