Bangladesh is hopeful of winning the Assistant Secretary General post of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The country has nominated Kamrul Ahsan, secretary (bilateral and consular) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for science and technology for the Asia group of OIC.

Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali formally introduced Kamrul to the OIC envoys during a conference in India.

OIC member state Kazakhstan also filed nomination for the post.

Elections in this regard will be held during the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) in Dhaka from Saturday.

Sources said Bangladesh wants to see a positive result in the said election as the host of the CFM.

Officials in Dhaka said they are hopeful of winning the post of the OIC Assistant Secretary General taking advantage of the host country.

An official expressed the hope that Bangladesh will get the support of 10 out of 18 countries required to win the election.

This is important to carry out an extensive campaign for Bangladesh candidature once the foreign delegates are in Dhaka to join the conference, the official said.

According to UNB, Bangladesh already geared up its campaign in support of its candidate.

Seven Bangladesh Ambassadors from various missions abroad are engaged in Dhaka to continue their campaign to make sure the Bangladesh candidate comes out successful, said a diplomatic source.

Already some Bangladesh missions are engaged in this campaign.

The 45th Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (OIC-CFM) begins in Dhaka on Saturday with a special focus on Rohingya issue and other challenges facing the Muslim Ummah.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to open the two-day event at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the city in the morning.

The theme of the year is "Islamic Values for Sustainable Peace, Solidarity and Development."

This is the second time that Bangladesh is hosting a CFM after holding the first in 1983, the official said.
