Bangladesh becomes Commonwealth’s Executive Committee member

Bangladesh has been elected a member of the Executive Committee (EC) of the Commonwealth from Asia for a two-year term effective from July 2018.

Bangladesh was elected on consensus basis in a meeting of the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth held at the Commonwealth Secretariat last week, said Foreign Ministry on Sunday.

The election process involves meetings and consensus efforts of regional groups and meeting of the Board of Governors, according to a report in UNB.

Four new members got elected from four regions of the Commonwealth namely, Asia and Europe, Americas, Canada and Caribbean, Africa, and the Pacific.

The diplomatic efforts of Bangladesh and its active participation in and contribution to the Commonwealth brought this outcome and honour for the country, said the Foreign Ministry.

Commonwealth Executive Committee consists of sixteen members of which eight are highest contributing member states and the other eight are elected from the four regions.

The Executive Committee of the Commonwealth is an influential body of the organisation of fifty three members which considers Commonwealth matters for decisions and recommends those proposals and decisions to the Board of Governors for approval.
