At least 12 die in Rangamati, Cox’s Bazar landslides

At least 12 people, including four of a family, were killed in separate incidents of landslide in different areas of Naniarchar upazila in Rangamati and Cox's Bazar districts early Tuesday amid heavy rains in the district.

In Rangamati, Four of the victims were killed in Darmachandpara, while four members of a family in Boro Poolpara and three in Hatimara in the upazila, said Tridip Kanti Das, member of Rangamati Parbotto Zila Parishad.

Among the victims, nine have been identified as Surendra Lal Chakma, 48, his wife Rajyo Devi Chakma, 45, their daughter Sonali Chakma, 9, and son Rumel Chakma, 12, of Boro Poolpara area; Phul Devi Chakma, Ety Chakma and a two-year-old child of Darmachandpara; and Rita Chakma, Riten Chakma of Hatimara area.

Abdul Latif, officer-in-charge of Naniarchar Police Station, said several teams of Fire Service and Civil Defence in association with policemen and locals are conducting rescue drives in the areas, according to a UNB report.

Besides, vehicular movement on Rangamati-Chittagong highway remained suspended as the road went under water at Thandachari point.

Many low-lying areas of the district were submerged due to the incessant heavy rains over the last two days.

Similar heavy rains will continue over the next two days as well, said the Met office.

In Cox's Bazar, Badsha Mia, 34, son of Chand Mia, of Panichhora village was killed in a landslide at the area around 8:00am, said Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Maheshkhali Police Station.
