ASK expresses concern over workers’ transport problem amid lockdown

Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) expressed grave concern over the transport problems which the apparel and other factory workers’ transport are facing amid the ongoing lockdown.

It said although the government stopped the movement of vehicles, industries remained open. As a result, workers are facing difficulties to go to their workplaces.

The legal aid and human rights organisation made its written reaction on Thursday.

Referring to media reports, it said hundreds of working people were seen going their job places on foot. Their factories also did not provide any transports for carrying them to workplaces.

On the other hand, people who were going to hospitals for treatment also faced troubles.

It said the government was implementing lockdown with a view to controlling coronavirus transmission. There is no alternative but following the direction of lockdown to protect public health.

The organisation, however, said without ensuring alternative supports for the workers and low-income groups, it would bring a negative impact on their lives.

It is the responsibility of the state to provide support to vulnerable groups.

Besides, transports can be ensured for emergency purposes of general people under the supervision of the government.

The ASK also suggested making more clear the guidelines of circular regarding lockdown and taking necessary campaigning programme so that people can be aware of it.

The government has started a nation-wide week-long strict lockdown from Thursday to help control in the surging infections and death due to the second wave of Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
