ASA founder Shafiqual Haque Choudhury passes away

Md Shafiqual Haque Choudhury, founder and president of the Association for Social Advancement (ASA), has passed away. He was 72, Prothom Alo reports.

He breathed his last at Square Hospital in Dhaka city around 1:00am on Friday, He had been suffering from heart diseases, according to the report.

Mr Chowddhury, also a former advisor to a caretaker government, left behind his wife, three sons and a host of relatives to mourn his death, the Bangla-language newspaper reports.

His namaz-e-janaza will be held on the premises of Shishu Polly Jame Mosque in Dhaka’s Shyamoli after Jumu'ah prayers.

He will then be laid to rest at Mirpur Intellectuals’ Graveyard, the report adds citing an ASA statement issued this morning.

Mr Chowdhury was born in Habiganj in 1949.

He founded the ASA, a microlending agency, in 1978.
