Army on highest alert to tackle cyclone Fani

Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed has said the army has been kept on the highest alert to tackle the imminent cyclonic storm ‘Fani’, which, the Met office said, is likely to hit Bangladesh’s coastal belt this evening.

“All divisions and area headquarters of Bangladesh Army have been put on standby as cyclone Fani is approaching towards Bangladesh territory crossing the Odisha coast,” the army chief told newsmen after distributing prizes in a function of Army Annual Firing Competition at Savar Cantonment Dhaka's Savar on Thursday.

He said the concerned divisions of the army are maintaining round-the-clock communication with the respective civil administrations in this regard.

General Aziz added: “We are fully ready to face pre, during and post cyclone storm situations.”

Earlier, BSS reports, he handed over the Best Firing Award and trophies to the award winners.

Chief of General Staff of the army Lt General Shafiqur Rahman, Dhaka Cantonment Log Area GOC (General Officer Commanding) Major General SM Safiuddin Ahmed, 9th Infantry division’s GOC Major General Akbar Hossain and Military Sectary Major General Waqar-uz-Zaman, among others, were present.
