Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has asked the Ministry of Planning (MoP) to allocate Tk 7.30 billion to develop residence and infrastructure for the Rohingya people under Ashrayan project, officials said.

In a recent letter, the PMO instructed the planning division to take necessary steps to allocate the fund from the budget for the current fiscal year.

"The office of the Ashrayan project-3 under the PMO has sought fund from the Ministry of Planning (MoP). The ministry is working on the fast track project," a high official at the MoF said.

The project site is located at Bhasan Char in Char Ishwar union of Noakhali district. The project is expected to provide shelters to 103,200 Rohingya people, according to a source concerned.

The project received a budgetary allocation of Tk 1.50 billion for the current fiscal year, most part of which has already been spent, according to a document of the PMO.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) in November last approved the project for construction of necessary infrastructure and temporary housing facilities for the displaced Myanmar citizens.

Bangladesh Navy will implement the project during a period between December 2017 and November 2019.

In 1997, the government had taken up the Ashrayan project, aiming to rehabilitate landless, homeless, jobless people and victims of river erosion on khas lands at different parts of the country.
