Advisory Committee seeks one more week of lockdown

The National Technical Advisory Committee (NTAC) on Covid-19 has recommended the continuation of the ongoing countrywide lockdown for one more week as both spread and fatalities from the virus continued to surge across the country.

Earlier, the Committee suggested a two-week countrywide 'shutdown" but the government imposed a week-long 'strict lockdown' from July 01, which is scheduled to end on Wednesday midnight.

On the other hand, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has warned of 'oxygen crisis' in the country if the demand for the same rises due to the further deterioration of the Covid-19 situation in the country.

"Now there is no supply shortage of oxygen in the country. But it would be difficult to cope with the demand for oxygen if the number of coronavirus patients keeps rising further," the DGHS spokesperson Prof Namul Islam said at the virtual media briefing.

According to the DGHS the number of Covid-19 patients had increased by 51 per cent during the 26th week of 2021 over that in the previous corresponding period.

Besides, the number of fatalities also rose by 46 per cent in the same period, the DGHS official said.
