The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has suspended all the activities of seven healthcare providers in the city for alleged irregularities.

It also served show-cause notices, asking for an explanation as to why their licences should not be cancelled, the DGHS said in a statement on Tuesday.

The organisations include six private clinics, diagnostic centres and one blood bank housed in Muktijoddha Tower in city's Mohammadpur area.

The organisations are: Prime Orthopaedic & General Hospital and Digital Diagnostic Centre, Dhaka Healthcare Hospital, Remedy Care Limited, Lifecare General Hospital Limited, Jamuna General Hospital, Royal Multi-Care Specialty Hospital & Diagnostic Centre and Rajdhani Blood Bank & Transfusion Centre.

The decision came following a drive conducted by DGHS officials on July 28 when they detected various irregularities, said the statement signed by Dr Md Habib Ismail Bhuiyan, assistant director at DGHS.

"Order has been issued to suspend all operations of the seven entities and show-cause notices have been served on them after approval from the director general against a backdrop of irregularities detected on July 28," the statement said.

The allegations against the organisations include realizing higher charges from recipients than the government-fixed rates; employment of unlicensed physicians and other staff; admitting patients to ICU for the sake of business; and non-compliance with health-waste and infection management.

Among them, Jamuna General Hospital was providing healthcare service to Covid and non-Covid patients at the same ICU in addition to charging higher tariff for oxygen than the government-fixed rates.
