'99pc people have toilet facilities in Bangladesh'

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain has said currently 99 per cent people of Bangladesh have toilet facilities.

The minister came up with the remarks while responding to a starred question from a lawmaker in the parliament on Sunday, reports UNB.

"The current government's sanitation activities in some upazilas and thanas are yet to be completed. Currently, the rate of families with toilet facilities reached 99 per cent," he said.

Of them, Mosharraf said, 61 per cent people use standard latrines while 28 per cent joint ones and 10 per cent sub-standard ones.

He said the government has taken various steps to ensure sanitation facilities in the upazilas and thanas where cent per cent such facilities still could not be ensured.

The minister said the government is setting up healthy latrines in very remote, flood-prone and hilly areas using suitable technology.

Besides, he said the government is implementing the 'National Sanitation Project (Third Phase).

Under the project, 150,000 low-cost latrines, 970 community toilets and 50 toilets are being set up.

Mosharraf said they have also taken various motivational activities to create awareness among people for improving the personal health hygiene.
