99pc people are now under basic sanitation: Minister

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said 99 per cent people are now under basic sanitation across the country.
Of them, 61 per cent use modern latrines, 28 per cent shared-latrine and 10 per cent undeveloped latrines, he said.

The minister came up with the statistics while replying to a starred question from treasury bench member Md Anwarul Azim Anar (Jhenaidah-4) at the parliament on Thursday, reports UNB.

He also informed that 87 per cent people are now under the coverage of safe drinking water facility, while the rest 13 per cent collect drinking water from other far-flung safe water sources.
In reply to another starred question from independent MP Md Abdul Matin (Maulvibazar-2), he said there are nearly 55,000 farmers' cooperatives under the Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB).

The number of women cooperatives under the BRDB is 7,193 and the number of members of the associations is 2,57,560 women, the minister said.

Besides, there are 1,28,345 poor people who are members of 5,515 others cooperatives under the BRDB, he added.

The LGRD minister also told the parliament that the number of Krishak Samabaya Samities (farmers' cooperatives) is 54,441 under the rural development board.

The total number of members of the Samities is 17,28,299, he said.
