Among the beggars, who were crippled due to different accidents in the country, some 82.53 per cent got crippled in road accidents, according to the latest study.
Some 17.46 per cent were crippled due to other reasons including falling trees, the study which was conducted by the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) has said.
Of them, some 32.69 per cent of the crippled beggars were fallen victims to road accidents while working buses, trucks, covered vans, and tractor workers, the study finds.
Some 17.30 per cent got involved in different road accidents while driving locally-made vehicles (Nasimon, Bhatvati, Chander Gari, Tomtom, Autorickshaw, Auto van, Paddle Rickshaw, Thalagari, and so on), the study revealed.
Some 42.30 per cent of motor vehicle passengers were involved in road accidents while some 7.69 per cent of pedestrians in road accidents, it said.
After the accident, some 11.53 per cent of the victims received little financial support from motor vehicle owners for treatment.
However, none of them got any financial benefit through Third Party Insurance of motor vehicles.
Everyone received help and support from the relatives and common people for treatment after the accident occurred, it said.
In those accidents, some 25 per cent of the victims expressed satisfaction and some 55.76 per cent expressed dissatisfaction with the medical services provided by the public hospitals.
Some 19.23 per cent of the victims did not comment on the medical care. Only 84.61 per cent of the victims received medical treatment from the government hospitals.
At one stage of treatment, some 15.38 per cent of the victims were treated in different private hospitals, as per the study.
During those accidents, some 51.92 per cent of the victims were between 13-25-year-old. Some 30.76 per cent were between 26 to 40 years old while some 17.30 per cent were between 41 to 60 years old.
The report was compiled by the RSF, which conducted an interview-based survey of 63 crippled beggars.
From February 2018 to March 2021, the survey was conducted in 19 places in Dhaka, including Dhamrai, Savar Ashulia, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Manikganj (Aricha and Paturia terminals), Rajbari (Goalanda ferry terminal), Jashore, Jhenaidah, and Kushtia.
