58 prisoners died behind bars in nine months: Report

A total of 58 prisoners died in different jails across the country in the first nine months of this year, according to a report of an independent rights body.

The prisoners died due to different reasons including illness, the Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) said in the report.

Among them, 34 were undertrial prisoners while remaining 24 were convicted, the ASK says.

In 2019, the number of deaths in jail custody was 58. Of the prisoners, 36 were undertrials and 22 convicts, according to the independent rights body.
