The government has decided to set up 50 new intensive care units or ICUs at Dhaka Medical College Hospital to cope with the rush of dengue patients.
The Directorate General of Health Services took the decision on Tuesday, reports bdnews24.com.
Currently, there are about 62 ICUs, including 30 units for newborns, at DMCH.
The patients in critical condition are generally recommended for intensive care. It became difficult to find a bed in those units as the influx of dengue patients stretched hospital services.
Meanwhile, the parents of a child suffering from dengue fever failed to find a bed in the ICU at DMCH. The child died in another hospital in Khilgaon.
To tackle the situation, the Directorate General of Health Services moved to install more intensive care units at DMCH.
“The process is underway. We hope the beds will be ready for patients in a day or two,” DMCH Director Brig Gen AKM Nasir Uddin said.
