464 killed in road accidents last December

Some 464 people were killed and 513 others injured in road accidents in December 2020 across the country.

During the period, a total of 402 road accidents occurred where the number of accidents involving motorcycles was the highest, according to a report by Road Safety Foundation (RSF).

Among the deceased, 76 were women and 51 children.

A total of 147 people died in 138 motorcycle crashes in the last month which is 31.68 per cent of the total deaths, said the report, released on Sunday.

The highest number of accidents took place in Dhaka division with the highest number of deaths. Some 138 people died in 117 accidents in Dhaka division, the report showed.

The lowest number of occurrences was reported in Rangpur division with 20 accidents and 18 deaths.

Besides, the number of waterway accidents in December was five where 17 people died. Some 19 were killed and four others injured in 12 railway accidents.

A total of 124 accidents occurred on highways, 129 on regional, 104 on village and 42 on urban roads.

The RSF prepared the report based on news items of seven national dailies, five online news portals and visual media.

Unfit vehicles, rash driving, lack of skill, mental and physical sickness, inadequate benefits for drivers, the slow movement of vehicles on the highways, reckless bike ride by youths, improper traffic management system and lack of awareness about traffic laws were responsible for the accidents, the RSF observed.

The organisation suggested increasing skilled drivers, strengthening the capability of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and enforcement of the existing laws to check road accidents in the country.
