A total of 40 judges and 136 staff of subordinate courts and 45 employees of the Supreme Court were infected with Covid-19 until today (Friday).

They were infected with the coronavirus pandemic while working for the virtual court as of Friday, said Md Saifur Rahman, special officer of Bangladesh Supreme Court (SC).

Of the judges, 17 from the lower courts have already recovered, the SC spokesman said.

One lower court judge died of the virus while another is receiving treatment from hospital, he stated.

The remaining 21 judges are receiving treatment at their homes, Mr Rahman added.

Earlier in a statement, the SC has requested the District Judges of the concerned districts to take necessary steps for the treatment of the virus infected judges and staff.

They are being kept in constant touch with the Bangladesh Supreme Court and the Chief Justice of Bangladesh is being informed from time to time.

A five-member committee headed by the Registrar General of the Supreme Court have been constituted for the apex court judges regarding the Covid-19 treatment.

In addition, another five-member committee led by the Registrar of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh are now busy on full-time duty to provide overall help for the lower court judges regarding the coronavirus treatment, according to the statement.

During the pandemic on June 24, Judge of the Lalmonirhat Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, Ferdous Ahmed died from Covid-19 virus infection.

Ferdous Ahmed, who held district judge status, was the first judge in Bangladesh to have died of the disease.

Different lower courts in virtual hearings across the country granted bail to 44,802 people in 30 working days from May 11 to June 25.

The courts also settled 84,657 bail petitions during the period of time under review.

Apart from this, 571 children secured bail through different virtual courts across the country in the last 30 working days.

The Supreme Court suspended the operation of all courts as part of the government efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus since March 26.

However, the court proceedings began through videoconference on May 11 after President Abdul Hamid promulgated an ordinance on May 10 that allows all courts to conduct trial proceedings through videoconference and other digital means.
