39 get death penalty in Ekram murder case

A court in Feni has awarded the death penalty to 39 people in sensational Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque killing case.

District and Session's Court Judge Aminul Haque handed down the verdict on Tuesday.

The court acquitted 16 others, including local BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar.

The local Awami League leader was killed in a daylight attack when his convoy was waylaid in the Feni district town on May 20 of 2014.

Armed assailants blocked his car, opened fire on the vehicle and set it ablaze with the chairman trapped inside.

Ekramul’s brother Rezaul Hoque Jasim started the case against Minar and 30 to 35 unidentified people with Feni Model Police Station on May 21, 2014.

Plainclothes police arrested Minar from the capital on May 27, 2014.

Police pressed charges against 56 people in August the same year.

The court indicted them in March 2016 and heard arguments until January 28 this year.

According to bdnews24.com and UNB, the court set March 13 for delivering the judgment in the case on February 13 and cancelled the bail of 22 accused and sent 36 accused to jail.
