NARSINGDI: Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has taken up a programme to cultivate jute on 3,810 hectares of land in the district with the production target of 35,950 bales of jute during the current season.
Official sources said of the total land, Tosa variety would be cultivated on 2,230 hectares Masta in 120 hectares, Kalap in 910 hectares and local variety in 550 hectares of land.
Deputy Director DAE, Narsingdi Mohammad Saidur Rahman said, "Farmers of all the six upazilas in the district have started Jute farming with enthusiasm and they have already cultivated 3,040 hectares of land in the beginning of the season".
He said that farmers have been showing more interest in farming jute this season as they got fair price of jute last year. Besides, the DAE also encouraging the farmers to cultivate more jute, the important cash crop by adopting modern technology.
He further said, "Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) has taken measures to provide the farmers with High Yielding varieties of seeds, fertilisers and insecticides and other inputs for cultivate more jute".
"Different Commercial banks are also providing easy term loans to the farmers. At present farmers are showing more interest to cultivate jute as by the initiatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina", he added.
