More than 3.4 million cases are now pending with both the higher and lower courts across the country.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq placed the statistics in Parliament on Monday.

"Now the total number of the cases pending with the country's higher and lower courts is 34,53,353," he said responding to a starred question from treasury bench MP M Abdul Latif (Chattogram-11).

The minister, however, said the government has taken effective measures for the quick disposal of the huge number of cases.

He said the present government has brought marked changes in the civil and criminal judicial systems after returning to power, reports UNB.

"The incumbent government has relentlessly been trying to reduce the backlog of cases taking it as a challenge," he added.

In reply to another starred question from Awami League MP AKM Zahangir Hossain (Patuakhali-3), the Law Minister said the number of cases pending with the High Court is 4,95,415, while that with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court is 19,493.

Of the cases pending the High Court Division, 3,12,205 are criminal cases, 94,492 are civil ones, and 88,718 are other cases, including contempt and writ petitions, he said.

Among the cases pending with the Appellate Division, 13,026 are civil cases, 6,351 are criminal ones and 116 are other cases, including contempt petitions, he added.

Anisul Huq said there are seven justices in the Appellate Division and 93 in the High Court Division.
