CUMILLA, Dec 03: The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has set up 320 disaster tolerant houses for the homeless in the district.
Cumilla district Relief and Resettlement Office sources said under the TR project this financial year, the disaster-tolerant houses have been constructed in 17 upazilas of Cumilla.
Among these, 18 houses have been built in Sadar upazila, 14 in Sadar South, 24 in Laksam, 24 in Barura, 24 in Chandina, 18 in Nangalkot, 18 in Chowdogram, 18 in Lalmai, 12 in Burichang, 18 in Brahmanpara, 18 in Devidwar. 18 in Muradnagar, 18 in Titas, 18 in Homna, 18 in Meghna and 18 in Dawdkandi.
The sources said each of these semi-pucca houses made by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has two bedrooms, veranda, one kitchen and one toilet. The cost of construction of each dwelling house has been estimated at Tk 0.29 million.
The total construction cost of these settlements has been estimated at Tk 95.9 million.
Earlier, in the financial year 2018-2019, 88 disaster-tolerant homes were constructed in different upazilas of the district and handed over to the beneficiaries. The cost of construction of each house was Tk 0.25 million. The total expenditure on construction of these settlements was Tk 22.7 million.
Abdul Kader of Muradnagar upazila, who was benefited from the allotted houses for the 2019-2020 financial year, said the hope for a house has come true.
Another beneficiary, Afia Khatun of Kalkot village in Konkapait Union under Chowdogram upazila, said she had never been in a good house in her life. She was very happy getting such a house.
Cumilla District Relief and Resettlement Officer Md Monirul Haque said 320 disaster tolerant homes are being constructed for 320 homeless families in 17 upazilas of Cumilla district under the TR and KABITA project this year.
Earlier in the last financial year, 88 disaster tolerant homes were built different upazilas of the district and handed over to the beneficiaries. He said it was a landmark move by the government for the homeless.
