The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has expressed concern as at least 30 people died from dengue fever between July and August in the country.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Wednesday, the country has reported a total of 6,956 cases of dengue fever since January this year.

Meanwhile, another 306 people were infected with mosquito-borne diseases in the past 24 hours including 273 people in the capital Dhaka city, said the DGHS.

Some 1193 patients were still taking treatment across the country including 1110 in Dhaka as of Wednesday. The total number of dengue patients in the country rose to 6,956. Of the total infected, 5733 people made recovery, said DGHS.

In 2020, Bangladesh had reported only three confirmed dengue-related deaths and 1,193 dengue cases. The country witnessed a dengue epidemic in 2019.

The rising number of deaths from dengue fever across the country amid deteriorated COVID-19 situation this year has created worry among the citizens and experts.

In a regular health bulletin, the spokesperson of the DGHS Prof. Dr Nazmul Islam expressed concern over the number of deaths compared to dengue patients in the country.

"If we look at the number of patients, there are so many deaths compared to the number of dengue-infected patients. It is a matter of great concern," he continued.

“The dengue fever usually takes a turn when the rainy season comes and the infections could continue until September this year,” he added, saying that the dengue situation this year has turned into an alarming situation.

“In 2019, we saw how the dengue epidemic affected us. Again in 2021, we are fearing of facing a similar situation. But we think it is possible to deal with it by taking quick action and mass awareness from people’s end.”
