2nd span installation of Padma Bridge fails

Installation of the second span of the much-talked-about Padma Bridge failed to reach fruition between pillars number 38 and 39 on Saturday.

Project surveyor Mir Faruque Hossain said the floating crane carrying the 150-metre span weighing 3,140 tonnes could not reach the pillars due to the depth and strong current in the river.

Also, he said they will attempt to install the span on Sunday. Earlier, the installation process of the span began in the morning.

Construction work of Padma Multipurpose Bridge became visible with the installation of a 150-metre first span between the pillars 37 and 38 on September 30 last year.

UNB said construction work on the country's largest bridge started in December in 2015 and it is expected that the mega construction will be completed by December next year.

Country’s largest 6.15-kilometre bridge will have a total of 41 spans, each 150 metres long. Engineers concerned said a total of 41 spans will be installed on 42 concrete pillars.
