At least 27 Bangladeshis have been stranded in Afghanistan amid the Taliban takeover of the country, Prothom Alo reports.

Of them, 18 are in Kabul and the others elsewhere in the troubled country, Md Jahangir Alam, the envoy at Bangladesh Embassy in Uzbekistan, told the Bangla-language daily.

Bangladesh has no embassy in Afghanistan and has its interests there carried out by its Uzbekistan embassy.

Panic has gripped the Bangladeshis stranded, especially in Kabul, the Afghan capital.

Razib Bin Islam, one of six Bangladeshis who work for Afghan Wireless and who are now stranded in Kabul, said they were to leave Kabul on a flight on Tuesday but could not.

And so, he said, they are now contacting the Bangladesh embassy in Uzbekistan and the foreign ministry in Dhaka about returning home.

Foreign Ministry Secretary Masud Bin Momen said they are trying to safely bring back the Bangladeshis stranded in Afghanistan.

Security concerns among foreigners in Afghanistan have run deep amid the US withdrawal from the country leading to the swift Taliban takeover.
