25 fatalities from Dengue reported so far this year

So far, 25 fatalities from mosquito-borne Dengue fever have been reported in the country this year.

Of the total, 12 deaths took place in July and the remaining 13 in August, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in its regular bulletin on Monday.

Earlier the DGHS sent the fatalities’ information to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) in phases to examine whether they were caused by dengue.

DGHS also recorded 221 dengue positive or suspected patients in the 24 hour-period till Monday morning in the country.

Among them, 199 were hospitalised to 42 public and private healthcare facilities in Dhaka city.

Of the remaining patients, twelve were admitted to healthcare facilities outside the capital but within Dhaka division, one in Mymensingh division, five in Khulna division, two in Chattogram division, and two in Barishal division.

With these, the total number of dengue patients this year reached 6,321.

Currently, a total of 1,032 dengue patients are admitted to different public and private hospitals in the country including 960 in Dhaka city, and 70 patients in other areas of the country.

As many as 5,264 patients were discharged from the hospitals this year after they received treatment.

Amid Covid-19 pandemic, dengue outbreak this year is posing a serious threat to the country's public health sector.

The month of August registered as high as 3,663 cases whereas the entire last year reported 1,405 cases.

The country reported 2,286 cases in July, 272 in June and 43 in May, and three in April.

The mosquito-borne disease came out at epidemic level in 2019, when more than 100,000 cases were reported officially.
