220 candidates collect nomination forms for RCC polls

A total of 220 candidates have so far collected nomination forms from Rajshahi district election office for contesting the forthcoming election of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC).

Of them, two for mayoral post, 167 for general councillors and 51 for reserved seats for women.

Some local leaders of Bangladesh Awami League collected nomination paper on behalf of AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, mayoral candidate nominated by Awami League for RCC election, on Sunday.

Meanwhile, some local leaders of BNP collected nomination paper on behalf of Musaddique Hossain Bulbul, mayoral candidate nominated by BNP for RCC election, on Monday.

Seventeen of the candidates including 10 for general councillor posts were seen submitting their nomination papers till Monday afternoon.

Returning Officer Syed Amirul Islam said the election schedule was announced formally on June 13 last and the distribution of nomination papers began the following day, reports BSS.

The election office remains open for distributing and receiving nomination papers everyday including the weekly holidays from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

He said the candidates can submit their nomination papers to both the returning officer and assistant returning officer till June 28.

Returning Officer will scrutinise the nomination papers on July 1 and 2. July 9 has been set as the final date for withdrawal of candidature and election symbol will be distributed among the candidates the following day.

After getting election symbol the candidates can start their formal election campaign.

Islam said all preparations were taken for holding the election scheduled to be held on July 30.

He said the city corporation has 3,18,138 voters including 1,62,053 females to exercise their right of franchise at 137 centres to elect one mayor, 30 ward councillors and 10 councillors in reserved seats for women in the upcoming RCC election.
