2021 was a year of concern on human rights front: ASK

Ain O Salish Kendra (Ask) termed the outgoing calendar year of 2021 a year of concern on various aspects of human rights.

Evaluating the human rights situation of the country in 2021, it said the country witnessed many sensational events of rights violation like communal riots, forced disappearance, rapes, border killings, killing of Rohingya leader, extrajudicial killings and so on.

Freedom of expression was also observed to be hampered through application of controversial sections of the digital security act throughout the year.

Election climate concerning local government bodies was badly affected by violence and the tendency of winning polls unopposed was also observed. As a result, people’s trust in the election and politics keeps declining, which is bad sign for democracy, said the ASK.

The election commission failed to hold participatory and credible elections, it added.
