Two city corporations in Dhaka have decided to operate 20 cattle markets from July 17 to July 21, maintaining the health guidelines, on the occasion of the Eid-ul-Azha.

Out of the total 20 cattle markets, 18 will be makeshift ones, reports BSS.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has set up ten makeshift markets and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has prepared the other eight markets.

Apart from these makeshift markets, the permanent cattle markets of Gabtali in DNCC and Sarulia in DSCC areas will also remain in operation during the period, officials said.

The government has already launched virtual cattle market to lessen the gatherings in the markets to stem the COVID-19 infection.

Both the city corporations' officials said they would prioritise online trading instead of offline marketing.

According to the DSCC and DNCC officials, they have added some conditions considering the current situation of the coronavirus infection.

The conditions include ensuring enough soaps for washing hands, facemask use and barring the entry of ailing and aged people.

Besides, all markets must have separate gates for entry and exit.

Officials said city corporations would take action for failure to ensure these conditions.

The DSCC has set up makeshift 10 cattle markets at the Institute of Leather Technology ground in Hazaribagh area, Postagola crematorium, Meradia Bazar, Dholaikhal Truck Terminal, Blocks- E, F, G and H and section 1 and 2 of Aftabnagar (Easter Housing), DSCC Market at Golapbagh, Maitri Sangha Club in Khilgaon, Donia College, Dhupkhola club, Rahmatganj Club in Lalbagh area.

Meanwhile, the DNCC has prepared makeshift cattle markets at Block-E and Section-3 of Badda Eastern Housing (Aftabnagar), Mirpur’s section-6, Kawla Shialdanga, Uttarkhan Mainartek Shaheed Nagar Housing (residential) Project, open spaces near BGMEA building in Uttara, Bhatara, Basila 40-feet road in Mohammadpur and open spaces adjacent to the 300-feet road in Mohammadpur.
