188 killed in ‘shootout’ in 2020: ASK

At least 188 people were killed in ‘crossfire’, ‘shootout’, and ‘gunfight’ with law enforcement agencies in 2020, said a report of Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK).

Of them, 112 people were killed in the ongoing anti-drug drive. Besides, 11 people died while they were in custody. Eight people were killed in shootout and five were killed because of tortures before arrests by law enforcers, the report showed.

The ASK presented the report titled: Human Rights Situation of Bangladesh in 2020, Analysis of Ain o Salish Kendra at a virtual press conference on Thursday.

The report said that at least six people fell victim of abduction or enforced disappearances in the just past calendar year. Of them, four were shown arrested later and two remained disappeared till now.

A total of 247 journalists faced repression and assault by law enforcers, government officials, influential people, local representatives, criminals, political activists while performing their duties during the Covid-19 period. Two of them died following tortures.

At least 42 Bangladeshi nationals were killed in shootout and seven were killed due to tortures by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) in 2020.

In the just passed year, 1,627 women were raped and gang-raped while 53 women were killed and 14 committed suicide.

The ASK expressed concern over the rights situation of Bangladesh saying that it is alarming. It suggested ensuring fair investigation and justice to protect people.
