18 Vietnam-returnee migrant workers released on bail

Some 18 Vietnam-returnee migrant workers, arrested by police under section 54, were released on bail on Saturday.

Besides, the rest of the detained workers are expected to get bail on Tuesday, said advocate Salma Sultan, programme officer at Bangladesh Manabadhikar Bastabayan Sangstha (BMBS).

The BMBS is providing legal assistance to the detained workers to get bail.

A total of 83 returnee migrant workers were arrested after completing 14 days quarantine on September 01 by Turag Police Station. Of them, 81 returned from Vietnam and two from Qatar.

Turag Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Anwarul Islam produced them before a metropolitan magistrate, showing them arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Ms Sultan said the workers were the victims as they were trafficked to Vietnam.

So, the arrest is unlawful. Rather they should be given supports from the government, she said.

The workers are the victim of rights violation at home. So, we are providing legal supports to free these helpless people, she added.

About the Qatar-returnee workers, Ms Salma said, they were also trafficked to Qatar and fell prey to human traffickers.

So, they also should not have been arrested by law enforcers after returning home, she said.

A section of manpower recruiters sent the workers with tourist visas to Vietnam after promising safe migration with jobs, said victims and their families.

Having been tricked by recruiting agents, these workers protested against employers and recruiting agencies and demanded their repatriation immediately.

The workers were brought back home by a chartered plane on August 18.
