Coronavirus has so far claimed the lives of at least 164 doctors in the country while the total numbers of infections among the health workers have exceeded 8,380, according to a report of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA).

The deceased also include three dental surgeons, said the apex body of the physicians on Monday.

BMA expressed deep condolences to the victims’ families, saying the contribution of the physicians in such a situation should not be forgotten.

As many as 2,987 doctors, 2,086 nurses and 3,307 other health workers got infected since the first virus case was reported in the country in March last year, the statement of BMA added.

The BMA said physicians and other health staffers have been dedicatedly carrying out their duties to address the pandemic situation, and at least 164 doctors have died in the pandemic while many more have been infected and facing burnout due to carrying out their duties in the pandemic relentlessly.

But, except for a few government doctors, no private doctors and health workers have been provided the government announced incentive, BMA said.

The body also called for proper support for health staffers as they are the front line fighters against the pandemic.
