Five power plants having 1,508 megawatt (MW) generation capacity would be commissioned by December this year as the government is working to implement by 2020 the seventh five-year-plan related to SDG targets.

"Following the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) in 2030, the government would ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services," State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid told BSS at his office in the capital on May 8.

He said five power plants, having a total of 1,508MW generation capacity, have been under construction, which would be operational between June and December of this year.

According to project details, the under construction power plants include Bibiyana South 383MW, Sirajganj 225MW (Unit-3) and Bibiyana 400MW (Unit-3) are scheduled to be commissioned by December 2018, while Sirajganj 225MW (Unit-2) and Barapukuria 275MW (Unit-3) would come in operation in June 2018.

Apart from this, the government is working to import 500MW electricity from Baharampur in India from June 2018, reports BSS.
