Around 1,330 hectares of farmland in Kola union under Badalgachhi upazila of Naogaon district have been submerged by rainwater due to lack of a canal.

Locals said the vast tract of land goes under water in rainy season every year and remains inundated for about six months.

It has become impossible to cultivate vegetables, jute and Aman paddy on these farmlands, resulting in great losses to the farmers, they said, adding excavation of a canal can resolve the problems of thousands of peasants of the area.

One Sohel Rana of Gahera village of the upazila said he has six acres of land in the area but he cannot benefit fully from this land as he can cultivate crops on it only once a year.

"We have been raising demand for excavating a canal for the last several years, but no one paid heed to the matter," he lamented.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abu Taher said, "We've visited the area recently and a survey has already been conducted on the said land."

An occupied portion of the land has to be recovered from grabbers.

And after completion of a few more formalities, the canal excavation work will hopefully be started, Mr Taher added.
