1,271 people die with Covid-19 symptoms in Bangladesh: Report

A total of 1,271 people across the country have died with Covid-19 like symptoms from March 22 to June 20, according to a report released on Thursday.

A project styled The Bangladesh Peace Observatory (BPO) under The Centre for Genocide Studies (CGS) of Dhaka University revealed the report.

In the last week from June 14 to June 20, some 174 people died with Covid-19 like symptoms, while the number was 206 in the week before – the highest weekly death so far.

Some 154 people died in the week from May 31 to June 6 while some 73 people died in the previous week from May 24 to May 30 with the symptoms of coronavirus infection, the BPO report showed.

The BPO has prepared the report based on information from 25 media outlets, including daily, national and regional newspapers, television channels and online news portals. However, this information has not been verified from the field level.

The BPO has been publishing regular reports on a number of issues with the financial support from United Nations Development Programme(UNDP).

Dhaka division registered 303 deaths with such symptoms between March 22 and June 20 while the death toll in Chattogram reached 386 which is the highest among the eight divisions during the same period.

Mymensingh division recorded 48 deaths, the lowest among the divisions, the BPO report stated.

Death tolls in Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna and Barishal divisions also stood at 78, 123, 68, 132 and 133 respectively.

Meanwhile, the death toll from the deadly respiratory disease (Covid-19) in Bangladesh crossed 1600-mark on Thursday (June 25).

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported 39 deaths from the virus in the 24 hours to 8:00am on the day.

With the latest victims, the death tally due to the deadly virus infection now stands at 1621, Additional Director General of the DGHS Dr Nasima Sultana said.

According to the DGHS, a total of 3,946 people were tested positive afresh by the virus, during the same period, pushing the number of such cases in the country to 126,606.
