11 die in stampede while collecting iftar items in Chattogram

At least 11 people were killed and 50 others injured as they scrambled to collect iftar items distributed by the management of Kabir Steel and Re-Rolling Mills (KSRM) at Nolua union in Satkania upazila of Chattogram on Monday.

Deputy Commissioner of the district Mohammad Elias Hossain said the stampede broke out as hundreds of destitute people crowded there for collecting iftar items ahead of Ramadan, leaving 10 people dead on the spot.

Among the injured, one died at a local hospital, says a UNB report.

Satkania upazila nirbahi officer Mobarak Hossain said the incident took place when the KSRM authorities started distributing the iftar items in front of the house of its owner Mohammad Shajahan around 12:00pm.
