Dengue claimed another life in the capital while 1,025 new patients were hospitalised across the country in 24 hours till Friday morning, according to government data.

Fifty-two-year old Munni Begum from Keraniganj died around 9am at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Her son Imran Hossain said she was admitted there on Wednesday, reports UNB.

Data released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) showed 1,189 new patients were admitted on Thursday. The number was 1,157 on Wednesday.

Bangladesh, like many other Southeast Asian countries, has been hit hard by dengue this year. The government said 69,435 patients had been hospitalised since January 1. Of them, 64,558 were discharged after recovery.

At present, 4,697 people are being treated for dengue – 2,610 of them in Dhaka alone.

Dengue, a mosquito-borne viral infection, causes flu-like illness, and occasionally develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue.

WHO says severe dengue is a leading cause of serious illness and death among children in some Asian and Latin American countries. Although there is no specific treatment for dengue, early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below 1.0 per cent.
