These habits can worsen your acne problems

Acne, commonly known as pimples is a common problem especially among teenagers. It commonly happens during puberty and usually goes away in the adult years.

However, there are certain habits that could cause deterioration of the condition, resulting in permanent scars.

One of the common things people do is try popping their pimples. US Dermatologist Dr Allison Arthur explained that when the pimple is popped, the bacteria or pus inside spreads over the skin. The consequence is bigger and more widespread pimples and sometimes scarring.

There is a perception that sugary and processed foods may cause or exacerbate pimples. This is, however, not convincingly proven. But cutting back on sugary food is definitely a healthy choice.

Many of us try to cover the pimples on our faces with makeup which is a mistake. Chemicals in the make up can increase the inflammation associated with it. Doctors suggest using makeup that says ‘non-comedogenic’ on the label. These are the makeups that do not block the skin pores.

Leaving makeup on the skin for a long time should be avoided as well. Another New York dermatologist, Dr. Rebecca Kleinerman mentioned that such a practice can block the pores on the skin, which is one of the natural pathways to expel toxins and waste from the body. When this is obstructed, pimples can worsen.

So, washing the face to clean up makeup is a healthy thing. We should not go to bed with makeup all over the face. Dermatologists also recommend washing the face after exercise to keep it free of harmful bacteria.

But excessive washing is discouraged. Many are afraid that if they do not wash their skin repeatedly, it will become dirty, and this gives rise to pimples. However, this is not true.

Too much washing will rip the skin of essential oil, causing the body to go into excess oil production which predisposes to pimples. Washing the face twice a day should suffice.

Sharing makeup equipment, like brushes should be avoided. Though acne or pimples is not a contagious disease, this can cause the transfer of pimple-causing bacteria, dead skin cells or oils between people.

The makeup kit should be kept clean. For example, brushes must be cleaned at least weekly, and a good cleaning can be done every day by makeup removing wipes.

We should change our pillowcase frequently, as a dirty pillowcase is a good habitat for many bacteria. Cleaning the cell phone properly is also important. Each time we are pressing the phone screen against the face, some oil and bacteria are transferred to the screen.

When the phone is pressed to the skin next time, bacteria may be pushed back further into the skin, causing the pimples to spread.

Frequent touching and rubbing the face should be stopped.  Such touching can spread bacteria that lives on your skin, causing inflammation and pimples.
