Thalassemia –affected children to get free blood Saturday

Bangladesh Thalassemia Foundation (BTF) and Cosmos Group are jointly organising a 'Blood Donation Camp' at Cosmos Centre in the city's Malibagh area on Saturday for the thalassemia-affected children.

All donors of blood at the camp will get free blood test for five infectious diseases namely Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV,Syphilis and Malaria, reports UNB.

Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder that causes severe anemia in children. These patients need 1-2 bags of blood every month to survive.

According to BTF, seven per cent of Bangladesh's population is thalassemia carriers and each year, 7,000 babies are born with thalassemia in the country.

Founded in 2002 by a group of thalassemia patients, family members and volunteers as a support group, BTF later expanded its activities to patient management and thalassemia awareness.
