‘Taking vitamin-C, zinc, current treatment can prevent transmission of Delta variant’

To prevent the high transmissible and more fatal Delta variant, microbiologist Dr Bijon Kumar Sil noted taking a combination of Vitamin C with Zinc along with the current conventional COVID-19 treatment as the best option at this moment.

Dr Sil came up with the suggestion at a webinar organised by Gono Bishwabidyalay on Saturday.

Delta coronavirus variant has taken a dire and a paradigm shift as its transmission and fatalities are very high at this time, he said the current head of microbiology department at Gono Bishwabidyalay.

Dr Bijon Kumar also stated Delta variant is now 70 to 80 per cent more virulent and faster than UK’s Alpha variant almost thrice as transmissible as the original Wuhan strain of SARS-CoV-2.

Prof. Dr. Laila Parveen Banu, Vice-Chancellor, Gono Bishwabidyalay chaired the event.

Gonoshasthaya Kendra's founder Zafrullah Chowdhury and virologist Dr Nazrul Islam, a member of the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19, among others, also spoke on the occasion.

Terming that delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 has almost replaced the Alpha variant as the fastest and fittest variant, as remarked by the World Health Organization and CDC, Dr Bijon also said the changing pattern of clinical sign and symptoms along with faster transmission of Dire Delta Variant (DDV)  could be associated with the adaption and multiplication of virus in the upper respiratory cells like human influenza virus where α-2-6 sialic acid receptors are abundant and could be associated with the mutation of T19R.

Dr Sil also urged all to be vaccinated to curb the virus and save lives.

He also suggested using masks, social distancing and other measures even after the completion of all doses of vaccinations in this regard.

However, the manifestation of early symptoms of DDV infected patients are more closely related with rhino laryngological symptoms such as sore throat, sneezing, runny nose which are very much related with classic influenza infection, the microbiologist insisted.

It is a matter of serious concern and worrying that the Delta variant transmits more easily from person to person, increasing infections and hospitalisations among the unvaccinated people, he added.
