Nutrition policy needed to face growing challenges: Experts

Providing packed food items as tiffin for students during their school time could be the best solution to proper safety of food or hygienic food in terms of meeting their nutritional demands as well as for good health, experts told International Nutrition Olympiad 2022 on Sunday.

As a leading entrepreneur in food sector also an expert in the relevant field, Well Group chairman and CEO Syed Nurul Islam stressed the need for formulation of a national nutrition policy.

He was addressing two separate sessions—one styled ‘Challenges and Opportunities to Introduce Inclusive School Meal’ and another titled ‘Inclusive financing and investment for Nutrition’ as the special guest—hosted by BIID Foundation with support from Ministry of Food, Department of ICT, ICT Division, USAID, GAIN and Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University, according to a statement.

Mr Islam suggested that the government frame a policy that ensures that private-sector stakeholders operate in the market with due compliance and the general public and parents have to be involved in the process of making an acceptable approach and ensuring implementation properly.

If there is no sustainability, he said, it is not possible to survive in any trend of businesses. It always depends on profitability. “I believe in market economy where there is no way to survive without profitability or sustainability.”

Primary and mass education ministry deputy secretary Farhana Haque, WFP nutrition officer Tonima Sharmin and BIID Foundation CEO Md Shahid Uddin Akbar, among others, also spoke.

Rudaba Khandker, country director of Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), was also present and delivered her speech in the session styled ‘Inclusive financing and investment for nutrition’.

Well Food and Beverage Company Limited, a concern of Well Group, became the food partner of the   ‘International Nutrition Olympiad 2022’.
