Bangladesh government taking steps to start booster doses

The government is likely to start administering booster doses of coronavirus vaccine to the people aged 60 years and above, as its preparations are underway.

"The eligible booster dose receivers are being listed, and the dedicated app is being updated. Once these activities are completed, people will get their booster doses," Health Minister Zahid Maleque said.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and the ICT Division were working to upgrade the mobile application, he said while attending a seminar in the city on Thursday as the chief guest.

But the minister did not say which vaccine would be used as the booster dose here.

Replying to a question, Mr Maleque mentioned that the government had not yet found any case of the Omicron variant in the country.

"The two specimens collected from two players, who have recently come from Zimbabwe, are under investigation," he added.

Till Wednesday afternoon, the country administered 65,967,076 first doses of various jabs, and 40,730,900 second doses.

The health authorities said they had already covered the people, who were mostly vulnerable to Covid-19 infection.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh recorded no coronavirus-related death in the last 24 hours ending at 8:00 am on Thursday. This was the second time after April 3 last year that the country saw zero fatality amid fear of a possible outbreak of the Omicron variant.

However, 262 more people were tested positive during the same time. With these, the entire caseload stood at 1,578,550, while the death toll remained static at 28,016, according to the DGHS.

In the last 24 hours, the health authorities also reported that 287 patients recovered from Covid-19 infection across the country. It took the total number of recoveries to 1,543,491.
