Singer Shammi Akhtar dies after prolonged cancer sufferings, burial tomorrow

Noted singer Shammi Akhtar passed away after fighting cancer for five years, said her family.

The singer died on the way to a city hospital this afternoon.

The 62-year old singer breathed her last around 4pm on the way to BIRDEM Hospital, reports BSS.

The singer of popular songs like 'Dhaka Shahor Aisha Amar Asha Puraiche', 'Ami Jemon Achi Temon Robo Bow Hobo Nare', 'Chithi Dio Protidin', left behind his husband, two sons, a host of relatives, friends, well-wishers and followers to mourn his death.

Shammi trained in music from her young age under the tutelage of Ustad Goura Babu in Barisal.

Despite having a singing career since the 1970s, Shammi came to the mainstream attention in 1980 with the release of her most popular song 'Dhaka Shohor Aisha Amar' at the film "Ashikkhitha".

Her family sources, however, told media that she would be buried at Shahjahanpur graveyard in Dhaka Wednesday afternoon.
