Barbie, starring Margot Robbie, appears to have found its Ken. Ryan Gosling is reportedly in final discussions to play the iconic Mattel character in Warner Bros.' film based on the popular doll line, according to Deadline.
Greta Gerwig is directing the film, which stars Robbie in the lead role.
Because of his hectic schedule, Gosling first turned down the role, but while pre-production dragged on and the studio remained adamant that he was their sole choice, an opening in his calendar allowed him to sign the role.
With Gosling on the edge of signing on, the project appears to be on the verge of getting the greenlight, with production set to begin in early 2022 with a theatrical release planned for 2023. Gerwig and Noah Baumbach collaborated on the script.
This live-action Barbie project has been in the works since 2014. Robbie is producing the film with Tom Ackerley of LuckyChap Entertainment, Robbie Brenner of Mattel, and David Heyman of Mattel under her LuckyChap Entertainment company.
Josey McNamara of LuckyChap and Ynon Kreiz of Mattel are executive producers.
