Dour: A competition between nostalgia and contemporaries

Dour: A competition between nostalgia and contemporaries

Those who are from the ‘90s generation can remember the magic of actors like Mosharraf Karim, Tariq Anam, Azad Abul Kalam, Intekhab Dinar and many more. That was the time when TV dramas were one of the main sources of entertainment, and there were these actors, for whom the childhood of ‘90s kids was so colourful.

‘Dour’ is a recently released web series that has combined these actors with the present day talented actors like Irfan Sazzad and Tasnuva Tisha. Who wins here? Nostalgia? Or contemporaries? Old wine? Or youngsters?

Dour, which means a competition, literally shows kind of a competition here. Ruhul Amin (Mosharraf Karim), who–for some unknown reasons–makes his business rival Afzal Khan get murdered.

And the duty of investigation for this particular murder is given to Tariq Anam Khan, police from detective branch. Alongside, there is Intekhab Dinar, acting as Mosharraf Karim’s secretary, who tends to have a gray shade in his character.

On the other hand, from the youngsters’ team, there is Irfan Sazzad, Ragib Swagoto, Tasnuva Tisha and Sheikh Uzzal Hossen. All of them are friends, who had an assignment to steal Mosharraf Karim’s car, which is carrying some important paper related to the murder.

But surprisingly, Mosharraf Karim’s 7 years old son is also locked in the deck of the car. The story of the whole series circles around these papers and this kid.

Now, coming to the point, why is Dour special? Well, one of the most promising characteristics of Dour is, in its story, all the senior actors act as rivals or competitors, where all the junior ones act as friends, as mentioned previously.

For example, the encounters of Intekhab Dinar and Mosharraf Karim can be mentioned. Mosharraf Karim always somehow humiliates his secretary, just to maintain his authority. But, deep down, Intekhab Dinar sabotages Mosharraf Karim anonymously.

Then, the conversations between Tariq Anam and Intekhab Dinar are also relevant. Tariq Anam is trying to capture Mosharraf Karim’s motive for the murder by questioning him, and Mosharraf Karim is continuously hiding words. But, contemporarily he is also losing hope of finding his son back, as his lies are related to the stolen car too. Yes, a critical competition that is.

There is also an almost transparent competition between Tariq Anam and his boss, Azad Abul Kalam. Azad Abul Kalam continuously demotivates Tariq Anam to investigate, and most probably that is because of the professional envy.

But, if looked at the youngsters, they are always saving each other’s back. Even after one of them betrays the others, they do not eliminate him. All of the youngsters have their own miserable stories, which pushed them to the path of crime.

So, if a line is drawn between these two teams, it can be seen that members of the senior team are trying to fetch power at any cost, where the junior team is just trying to fetch just a better life.

The whole series stands on this philosophy that, in one part of the earth, there are plenty of foods, but no appetite, and in the other one, there is plenty of appetites, but no food!

At the end of the day, Dour is the reflection of what people demand and deserve, and how they compete for it. Well, with a spoiler alert note, in this first season, Mosharraf Karim wins the competition, but essentially, this is not the end. Just like Shah Rukh Khan once said, “The film is yet to be finished, my friend!”
