Alchemy of Souls: A new trend in the K-drama

Korean dramas are becoming increasingly versatile as they combine elements from more than one genre. With 'Alchemy of Souls,' the top trending content in Netflix Bangladesh right now, they seem to have broken all horizons as this has the quirkiest plot among all the recent K-Dramas.

The plot of the series revolves around the fictional country of Daeho, which is a bit reminiscent of mediaeval Korea.

The two lead characters are Jang Uk and Mu-Deok, and both have unpleasant secrets and circumstances that they would like to alter. Seo Yul and Go Won are two other important characters in the series. All of the lead characters are somehow linked with the nobility, giving a somewhat archaic vibe to the entire ambience of the show.

The principal genre of the series is fantasy, and as the name suggests, it is about soul transformation from one body to another and people being born in the wrong body when they were destined to be born in other bodies.

The drama also takes some inspiration from some anime, with 'Full-Metal Alchemist' being the most notable among them.

Apart from fantasy, the drama has a healthy mixture of horror and romance, which propels the storyline in different directions at different times, much to the awe of the viewers.

Korean dramas are often criticised for their over-the-top plotlines as well as acting. But this K-drama has even broken the stereotype as it doesn’t have highly exaggerated scenes, unlike most other dramas coming from South Korea.

The drama has already caught the world by storm and is expected to have 20 episodes in part 1, followed by another part with ten episodes. Despite being a fantasy series, each of the episodes has a lot of relatable elements, especially for viewers from Asia.

So far, 18 episodes are available on Netflix Bangladesh. The show is a great binge-watch for someone looking to spend an idle weekend.
